NOTES

Why Basalt is more sustainable than Fiberglass?

Raw Material Availability: Basalt is an abundant natural resource found in many parts of the world, making it readily available for fiber production. In contrast, fiberglass is primarily made from silica sand, which requires significant energy and resources for extraction and processing.

Energy Consumption: Melting basalt rock at high temperatures consumes less energy than the production of glass fibers.

Environmental Impact: Basalt fiber production emits fewer pollutants and greenhouse gases compared to fiberglass production. Additionally, basalt fiber manufacturing typically generates less waste and air pollution.

Health and Safety: Basalt produces fewer airborne particles during processing and poses fewer health risks to workers and end-users.

INNOVATIVE SHAPERS SUPPLIES

At the core of every high-performance surfboard is a critical element—fiberglass. This essential material forms the foundation of modern surfboard construction, delivering the strength, flexibility, and lightweight properties that surfers rely on. However, traditional fiberglass wasn’t originally designed with surfboard manufacturing in mind.

Recognizing this gap, Studio Atomico went back to the drawing board to create materials specifically tailored to meet the unique demands of surfboard shapers.
